Support Ministry

Support Groups that Meet at FUMC:

Cancer
This group meets on the 2nd Monday of the month at 4:00 p.m. in room 201.  Call Priscilla at 226-2358.

Caregivers
This group meets the 2nd Saturday of each month at 10:00 a.m. in the church library.  Call Paula at 225-5680. Care Giver's Group is for persons who are caring for their loved one who may still be at home or may already be in a nursing home. The group provides information, support & sharing for those who care for other adults in their life.

Chronic Pain
This group meets each Friday at 12:00 p.m. in the Community Room.  Call Karen at 380-8905 or Paula at 225-5680. (more information below)

Divorce Support
This group meets the 1st & 3rd Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room.  Call Paula at 225-5680. This group offers nondenominational spiritual care to those who are separated and/or divorced.   Newcomers are welcome to join the group at any time.  One topic is covered at each meeting followed by group discussion of the information presented during the video.  Participants are encouraged to share and support each other. 

Men's Purity
Tuesdays at 7:00 pm in room 209. Call Jay at 380-8905.

Gamblers Anonymous
This group meets on Monday & Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Room 103. 

Griefshare
This group meets Mondays at 4:00 pm in the Community Room.  Call Pastor Eldon at 225-5680. Grief Support Group is for those who have lost a loved one.  Hurting people find healing and hope as they share the journey of grief.  Sessions will be led by Pastor Reich and include a video seminar and support group discussion. Grief is perhaps the most difficult of human emotions to face, though it also has the potential for being the most therapeutic.  Grief isn’t a bad thing; it’s the cost of having loved.  If we hadn’t loved, if we hadn’t cared, we wouldn’t grieve.  And our lives would have been even emptier.

MOPS (Mothers of PreSchoolers)

MS Support Group
This group meets on the 1st & 3rd Saturday of each month at 10:00 a.m. in the Community Room.  Call Lois at 225-7190 or 216-6271.

Widow Support Group
This group meets on the last Monday of each month at 9:00 a.m. at Perkins.  Contact Carol Iwerks at 225-7473. Monthly breakfast includes fellowship & devotion. Also, special outings are frequently planned. All denominations are welcome.

Do you suffer with chronic pain/chronic illness? The Chronic Pain/Chronic Illness Support Group a group of people who will welcome you with warm, non-judgmental, and caring reassurance. "We aren’t meant to ‘do’ this journey alone" Meet others who share the journey of chronic illness and daily pain. They’ve been there. They’ve heard it. They gather to encourage each other, to offer each other emotional support. This group is a place where "everyone understands." You will meet people who will rejoice with you and who will also cry with you. We invite you to come and find out more.

HISTORY OF THE PARISH NURSE

For centuries, the church has been a place of comfort where the wounded spirit can be nurtured and restored. Hundreds of churches are realizing that their parishioners' physical and emotional needs are interwoven with their spiritual well being. At the forefront of this ministry is the Parish Nurse.   Reclaiming an old tradition of the church to go out and preach the Kingdom of God and to heal (Luke 9:2)   Recognizing that the mission of the church community is to proclaim God's desire that we achieve abundant life.   Reaffirming and supporting the journey toward wholeness in the relationship of body, mind, and spirit.  

 

WHO IS THE PARISH NURSE?

A Parish Nurse is a registered nurse who is committed to the healing mission of the church.

 

WHAT IS PARISH NURSING?

Parish Nursing is a melding of nursing and ministry. The Parish Nurse ministers to individuals and families, using health education and spiritual maturity to promote wellness of body, mind, and spirit. This ministry is lived in and through a faith community.

 

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE PARISH NURSE?

Health Educator-

*Seeks to promote an understanding of the relationship between lifestyle, attitudes, faith, and well-being.

*Helps out with support groups.

*Uses volunteers as needed.

 

Personal Health Counselor-

Discusses health problems with parishioners and makes home, hospital, and nursing home visits.

 

Liaison with Community Health Organizations-

Acts as a liaison to community resources and services.

 

Clarifier of the Close Relationship Between Faith and Health- Brings together aspects of faith and health, how they relate and impact each other.

WHAT ARE EXAMPLES OF PARISH NURSE MINISTRY?

 

1. Coordinate presentations on such areas as: stress management, living wills,

      Screening for hypertension, etc. 2. Offer support to individuals who are grieving.

3. Refer people to various support services, including adult programs, depression support, and Alcoholics Anonymous.

4. Offer presence and prayer during times of crisis and of celebration.

5. Encourage individuals toward healthy living through exercise, good nutrition, and spiritual disciplines.

6. Assist pastors in healing ministry
